According to the Minister, unlike other road maps that had four years’ lifespan, the NSTIR Roadmap, which was slated to run for 13 years, 2017-2030 will help to move the economy from resource based to a knowledge based and innovation driven economy.
The Roadmap, he added is designed to catalyze effective implementation of programmes and projects of Nigeria’s Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs).
“it also covers the realities of Nigeria’s current short-term economic development as contained in the “Nigeria Economic Recovery & Growth Plan 2017 – 2020”. NSTIR 2030 covers three implementation periods; of short term (2017 – 2020), medium term (2021 – 2025), and long term (2026 – 2030)”. he added.
According to Dr. Onu, “NSTIR 2030 targets mobilization of Nigeria’s intellectual resources for growth and diversification of the economy, provision of incentives for all stakeholders, including the private sector, academia, Nigeria Diaspora and non-profit/community groups to embrace and engage in STI, improvement of science infrastructure”, The Roadmap will also help in the intensification of research and development, promote the development of talents and skills, ensure deployment and commercialization of technologies, improvement of science literacy and public stakeholders engagement processes in Nigeria”, he added.
Earlier in his opening remarks, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Mr. Bitrus Bako Nabasu, said that the Road Map is a deliberate step by this administration to move the country in a new direction.
