RESEARCH SHOULD BE FOCUSED ON NATIONAL CHALLENGES-DR ONU

The Minister of Science and Technology, Dr. Ogbonnaya Onu has said that research findings done by the nations research institutes must be focused on solving the nation’s problems.
 The Minister, gave the order during the visit to the made the National Board for Technology Incubation (NBTI)-enabled Honey making factory, A & Shine Honey in Kuje Abuja at the weekend.
Dr. Onu in his speech, “ We want our Research findings to have national focus. Research Institutions must carry out research that could solve national issue”. He further said that the products gotten from research should be commercialised in order to achieve the purpose of solving issues facing the countr
He further said he was satisfied with the product produced by the factory because it adds value addition. The importance of this feat he further said, would make the honey products be of more export value, thereby earning more foreign exchange for the manufacturers and Nigeria..
“ We will use the skills and trainings gotten from NBTI to create added value to our products”, he added.
According to the Minister, the product is of immense value to people’s health because it contains Moringa, Ginger and Garlic. This added materials in the honey, distinguishes it from ordinary wild honey, thereby making it a product that has addition value.
The Minister, assured the manufacturers of the total support of the Ministry to develop the factory .
some of the Ministry’s key agencies will collaborate further with the manufacturers.“NASENI will assist with automated production machinery, NABDA, FIIRO, NBTI and RMRDC will also support in other key and technical areas”, he added.
He further praised the efforts of NBTI and the manufacturers to grow the company from a small scale enterprise to a Medium enterprise currently, with potentials of growing into a large scale enterprise.
Dr. Onu appreciated the manufacturer for their role in creation of more jobs and wealth for the nation, achieving self-reliance in food security and aiding people in acquiring skills in Honey production.
Earlier, the Director General of NBTI Engr. Dr. Mohammed Jibrin, expressed hope that A & Shine Honey would grow into a large scale industry, meet up to the demand of the market and collaborate in many areas with key relevant Research Institutions in order to boost production.
He further said Honey business is lucrative, as a barrel of wild honey on the International market is $1,750.00 ( A Thousand, Seven Hundred and Fifty U.S Dollars), in contrast to a barrel of crude oil which goes for less than
Also the owner of A & Shine honey, Mrs. Adesina described the enormous untapped potentials from honey, because there are many by-products from honey which are of high-value on the International market.
