Why We Exist
The Federal Ministry of Innovation, Science and Technology (FMIST) serves as a critical platform for collaboration across government agencies and state ministries, focusing on applying science, technology, and innovation (STI) to drive national development.
Mandated by the National Science, Technology and Innovation Policy of 2022, FMIST is responsible for promoting the development and utilization of scientific research and technological advancements across all sectors of the Nigerian economy. Its mission is to foster inclusive growth, enhance national security, boost agriculture, strengthen infrastructure, and advance industrialization and innovation, contributing to Nigeria’s overall socio-economic progress.

Our Mandate
The FMIST is tasked with driving the nation’s technological and scientific growth through strategic mandates that enhance collaboration, innovation, and economic development. These mandates serve as a blueprint for transforming Nigeria into a global leader in science, technology, and innovation.
1. The mandate of FMSTI, in accordance with chapter 2, section 18, sub-section 2 of the 1999 Constitution as amended, is the Promotion of Science and Technology in Nigeria.
2. The Ministry is further mandated by the National Science and Technology Act of 1980 to be responsible for the establishment of Research Institutes in Nigeria with the approval of the President and Commander-in-Chief
3. Following the broad mandate stated above, the National Science, Technology and Innovation Policy of 2022, further mandated FMSTI to operate as a platform for collaboration among Agencies of Federal Government and State Ministries on Science, Technology and Innovation and
4. To operate as a service Ministry of Government to interact with all relevant Agencies and organizations, synergizing and promoting the application of Science, Technology and Innovation results in all sectors of Nigerian economy, including in the areas of Industrial Growth, Metrology, Human Capital Development, Agriculture, Health, Environment, Energy, Banking and Finance, Communication Technology, Women and Youth Empowerment, Job Creation, Tourism, Trade, Science Acculturation, Water Resources, Meteorology, Natural Resources, Building Construction, National Security, Nuclear Science and Technology, Sports and Recreation, Diplomacy, Transportation, etc.
Our Objectives
- Promote Science, Technology, and Innovation (STI)
Drive the advancement and utilization of STI to improve productivity and national development across all sectors. - Collaborate with Federal and State Ministries
Serve as a platform for synergy between federal and state bodies to implement STI initiatives efficiently. - Implement National STI Policy
Oversee and execute the National Science, Technology, and Innovation Policy, ensuring its integration into national strategies. - Support Research and Development (R&D)
Encourage scientific research and development to foster innovation, technological advancements, and problem-solving capabilities. - Foster Technology Transfer
Promote the transfer of technology between researchers, inventors, and industries, facilitating the adoption of cutting-edge innovations. - Develop Legal and Institutional Frameworks
Ensure the creation and implementation of policies, laws, and institutional structures that support STI growth. - Enhance STI Funding
Secure and allocate resources to fund science, technology, and innovation projects, ensuring sustained progress in critical sectors. - Promote Capacity Building
Enhance human capital development through training, education, and skills development in science and technology fields. - Encourage Industrialization and Digitization
Spearhead efforts to industrialize and digitize the Nigerian economy by promoting innovation and technological solutions. - Address National Challenges
