Onu to strengthen linkages between Research Institutes and Industries for nation building
The minister of Science of Technology Dr, Ogbonnya Onu has identified the missing link between industriy; research Institutes, and universities as one of the weakness responsible for the low utilization of science and technology for nation building saying that the present administration is working very hard to strengthen that linkage.
The Minister noted this when the Co-Chair of the West African Infectious Institute (WAIDI) and the Director General, National Agency for the control of Aids (NACA) Prof. John Idoko paid a courtesy call on the him in Abuja.
He said “We are also directly working with industries to commercialize research findings because we don’t want research findings to end up only in the laboratory; we want all the research findings to get into market as product and services”.
Dr. Onu disclosed that “By working with Universities you would be able to share the knowledge which you generate through those universities to future leaders. We have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the university of Abuja to enable them make use of our agencies’ laboratories for their research findings”.
The Minister noted that the Ministry of Science is striving to ensure that the president fulfill his promise to Nigerians by creating the environment for private sector to come in and invest and also protect intellectual property. He stressed that the health of the nation is critical to development.
Earlier on, the Co-Chair of WAIDI and Director-General of NACA Prof. John Idoko said WAIDI is an autonomous, multi-institutional and collaborative center of excellence in Nigeria, to support and catalyze West Africa’s top universities, building health leadership in infection diseases training and research.
The NACA Boss stated that the aim is to share resources to all West African universities, add critical linkages and specialized infrastructure as needed. According to him, it will also produce world class research and educational initiatives and strengthen the ability of local government to improve health.
He disclosed that the institution would provide the opportunity to co-locate with extramural research initiatives and expansion to other academic institution.
In a related development, The Minister promised that the Federal Ministry of Science and Technology is ready to support any innovation and invention that would create Jobs and take Nigerians out of poverty.
Dr. Onu made the pledge when the Chief Executive of Kanoyo O.kanoyo Academy paid a courtesy call on him to seek partnership towards its goal of bridging the gap between the Ministry and young students with innovative ideas.
Mr. Kanayo said that the Nigerian Innovation Mentoring Programme is to produce the next Bill Gates and Noble Laureate through the opportunity to be provided by the collaboration between the ministry and the foundation and will thus to give back to the society what the society has given to him.
FG to support National Association of technology Incubation Entrepreneurs (NAITE)
The Federal government has pledged to support the National Association of Technology Incubation Entrepreneurs (NATIE) and provide them with necessary machineries to enable them migrate to from small to medium and eventually become a multinational companies that will make the economy resilient and strong .
The Minister of Science and Technology, Dr. Ogbonnaya Onu made the pledge when the executive of National Association of Technology Entrepreneurs (NAITE) paid a courtesy call on him in his office today to seek for assistance on the sourcing of raw materials at affordable rate and funding to enable them attain enhanced status in their business .
He expressed that ideas are being converted to products and services assuring them of looking at all the issues of concern to them in view of the progress recorded by one of them who has been listed on the Nigerian Stock Exchange.
He also advised of more synergy between them and agencies under the ministry notably the National Agency for Science and Engineering Infrastructure NASENI and the Project Development Institute (PRODA) who according to him have advanced technology especially in areas of reserved engineering.
Earlier, the Chairman of NATIE, Duro Kuteji had called on the Minister to support the proposal that all agencies of the government patronize made in Nigeria products and also accommodate them in the proposed Technology Park when fully established.

It is on record that NAITE members have more than one thousand five hundred (1500) products. Their collaboration with Nigerian Export Promotion Council (NEPC) has exposed many of the products to the International markets through fairs and exhibition especially in Benin Republic, Sudan, Togo and other ECOWAS markets.
FMST TO COLLABORATE WITH WAIDI IN RESEARCH DEVELOPMENT - ONU
Nigeria development is weak because Science, Technology and Innovation had not been utilized to aid Research in the Nation Building. This was the view expressed by the Honourable Minister of Science and Technology, Dr. Ogbonnaya Onu when Steering Committee of West African Infectious Diseases Institute (WAIDI) headed by the Director General of National Agency for Control of Aids (NACA), Professor John Idoko visited him in his office on Thursday, 18thMay, 2016.
Professor John Idoko briefed the Honourable Minister on the establishment of WAIDI Headquarters in Abuja where Research on Infectious Diseases will be carried out and also make their Resources available to all West African Universities, adding Critical International Linkages, Centralized Support Service and also Domesticate the end products, which will be more efficient and useful to solve health problems in Nigeria. He further seek for the support of the Ministry in making this a success.
In His response, Honourable Minister applauded the Institute on their Vision and Mission and promised to support and collaborate with them especially through one of the Ministry's parastatals, National Biotechnology Development Agency (NABDA) that has similar research mandate with the Institute.
FG to grow human capacity by stimulating interest in Science - ONU
As part of its commitment to ensure that all projects in the country are executed by Nigerians, The federal government has reiterated its commitment to grow human capacity and stimulate the interest of young people in science, technology and engineering.
The Minister of Science and technology, Dr. Ogbonnaya Onu stated this when the outgoing Ambassador of the People’s Republic of China to Nigeria, His Excellency Gu Xiaojie paid a farewell visit to him in Abuja.
Dr.Onu Stressed that developed countries all over the world understand that the initiation and utilization of science and technology is the instrument of development in the global economy.
In view of the evolving trend, according to the Minister, Nigeria is harnessing partnerships with developed countries and international organizations that are interested and ready to encourage the development and the stimulation of the interest of young people in science, engineering and technology.
The Minister expressed his appreciating to the outgoing ambassador for facilitating the signing of the memorandum of understanding between Federal Ministry of Science and technology and the Federal Ministry of Science and Technology of China.
He Commended him for the enormous work he has done within the period he served as the China ambassador to Nigeria to improve and strengthen relationships between two countries.
According to Onu, it was during his tenure that Nigeria successfully transferred power from one political party to another, the first time different political parties came together with a new identity and was able to win election ,it is the first time something like that has happen in Nigeria and indeed in Africa.
Earlier, The Chinese Ambassador to Nigeria, Gu Xiaojie noted that his stay in Nigeria was characterized by many significant and landmark achievements. He expressed his gratitude to Nigeria for enhancing the mutual beneficial understanding and friendship between China and Nigeria over the years.
Mr. Xiaojie congratulates Nigeria on the current Change going on in the country saying that Nigeria is on the path of greatness. The Ambassador said that China would always Support the commitment of the regional summit to combat terrorism and the fight against corruption.
He noted that Nigeria and China diplomatic relationship has lasted for over 46 years while partnership relationship is over ten years.
