2016 Budget will bring the desired change-Onu
2016 Budget signed into law by president Buhari will bring the desire change in the country because there are many programmes targeted at the vulnerable in the society, the Minister of Science and Technology Dr. Obonnaya Onu has said.
Dr Onu stated this when Save Nigeria-Buhari Ambassadors paid a courtesy call on him in his office today to seek for assistance in the provision of enabling resources for relevant national assignment.
The Minister noted that the present administration would fulfill his campaign promises by creating jobs, growing the economy and ensuring that there is adequate security and rule of law. He said that it is the collective interest of all to diversify economy so that we can create jobs and grow the economy.
“We want all Nigerians who want to work to have worked to do. It would help us to create wealth, achieve self-reliance and also help to fight crime, everybody in Nigeria is conscious that there is rule of law, there is no longer any room for impunity and arrogance of power”.
According to the Minister, “in the past, there was high level of impunity in the way government was run, there was so much arrogance of power, and they do anything they like because they felt they were above the law”
He said that people elected to an office hold it to the collective will of the people and appreciate the contribution of the Save Nigeria-Buhari Ambassadors during the last presidential election.
Earlier, the National Coordinator of the group Comrade Jazeel Ibriahim commended the recent order by the federal government for the recruitment of ten thousand Police men and women and to add to the number of personnels in the Nigerian Air Force and the recruitment of Five Hundred Thousand teachers in addition to the sectoral efforts.
They group intend to pay a visit to the president where they will make a presentation to him of the blueprint for job creation and constant youth empowerment for National Rebirth and also have a “Save Nigeria-Buhari youth Development Summit”.
FG to strengthen cooperation with France on space and security activities
The Federal Government would continue to strengthen relationship with France in area of Science and technology to tackle security challenges in the country the Minister of Science and Technology, Dr. Ogbonnya Onu has said.
The Minister stated this when the France Ambassador to Nigeria Denys Gauer paid a courtesy call on him in Abuja recently to propose for the negotiation and signing of cooperation on space activities.
Dr. Onu disclosed that Science and Technology is a major focus of this administration’s commitment to make positive impact on the people of Nigeria. He expressed his appreciation on the existing relationship between Nigeria and France.
Earlier, the France Ambassador to Nigeria Denys Gauer, said that the visit is to prepare ground for negotiation and the signing of cooperation in space activities. Mr Gauer noted that French government is committed to developing space activities in developing activities
The Ambassador also disclosed that the French President is scheduled to visit Nigeria this month for regional summit which is expected to bring out ideas on how to improve security, space and satellite activities to all the stakeholders
The Submit, according to the Ambassador, is expected to provide the framework for activities like training and exchange of ideas. According to the Ambassador the first regional summit was held in Paris two years ago.
The Head of Regional Economic Service in the French embassy in Nigeria, Mr. Dominic Simeon was with ambassador at the courtesy call. The French government is committed to develop space activities in and security in develop countries.
The Lagos Chamber of Commerce and Industry is committed to partnering with the Federal Ministry of Science and Technology as it strives to implement governments’ policy of diversifying the economy.
This promise was made during a courtesy call by the Lagos Chamber of Commerce and Industry led by Mrs Fola Gbogbode (Chairman Capacity Exhibition Committee) to the Honourable Minister of Science and Technology Dr Ogbonnaya Onu in his office.
Mrs Gbogbode, who represented the President of the Lagos Chamber of Commerce and Industry informed the Minister of the Chambers upcoming maiden edition of information and technology exhibition coming up on the 26th – 29th of July 2016.
According to her, she said that the purpose of their visit is to forge more collaboration with the Ministry, with the aim at seeking for measures that will promote information and communication technological know –how of their products and therefore sought close collaboration with the Ministry in the area of technical and professional competence available in the Ministry
Onu in his remarks commended the Lagos chapter on the giant strides and contributions it has made in the development of our locally made products which according him has led to their being the foremost promoters of businesses in Nigeria.
He further, stated that the Ministry’s core target is that ideas developed from researches are market driven and that the products will be beneficial to all Nigerians given the fact that the present administration is fully committed to diversification of the economy.
The Minister encouraged the Chamber to develop more interest on research findings as the Ministry through its 17 agencies, is positioned with their unique mandates to function in driving the diversification process of the current administration.
Dr Onu, reiterated governments resolution to make diversification process a reality as compared to the previous administrations, saying that the Chambers will benefit the most, if the private sector show more interest in commercialization of research finding that will create more jobs and provide additional wealth to lift Nigerians out of poverty.
He informed the delegation, of one of its agency, Federal Institute of Industrial Research Oshodi,( FIRO ) which has over 350 research findings out of which has been commercialized in partnership with NASCO group of companies in producing high density biscuits for children within ages 5 -10 years old.
In a related development, the Federal Ministry of Science and Technology, as part of it innovative and technological drive signed a Memoranda of Understanding (Mou) with the University of Abuja.
Dr Ogbonnaya Onu, during the Mou signing stated the Ministry’s commitment in working together with other Universities in the remaining five geo- political zones to promote research findings as well as good ideas that will culminate into good products and services for Nigerians.
In the same vein, the Vice Chancellor of the University Professor Michael Adikwu, in his opening remarks said that the purpose of their visit is to establish collaborations with the Federal Ministry of Science and Technology in areas of research findings, which will promote accelerated development through innovations, which will in turn assist students in their various fields of studies to excel and contribute to national development.

Honourable Minister heads to China with Mr. President
Honourable Minister of Science and Technology, Dr. Ogbonnaya Onu is amongst the team that travelled to China with Mr. President for a weeklong state visit.
The working visit is aimed at securing greater support from China for the development of Nigeria's infrastructure, especially in the power, aviation, roads, railways, aviation, water supply and housing sectors.
During the visit, Mr. President is expected to hold talks with President Xi Jinping and Premier Li Keqiang. The talks will focus on strengthening bilateral cooperation in line with the Federal Government's agenda for the rapid diversification of the Nigerian economy, with emphasis on agriculture and solid minerals development.
It is expected that in the course of the visit, Memorandum of Understanding between Nigeria and China on Scientific and Technological Cooperation, Several new agreements and memorandums of understanding to boost trade and economic relations between Nigeria and China will be concluded and signed.
In keeping with his administration's prioritization of economic diversification and industrialisation to boost employment, President Buhari and his delegation will tour the Shanghai Free Trade Zone and the Guangzhou Economic and Technological Development Zone to gain more useful insights and understanding of the policies that underpinned China's astronomical economic growth in recent years.
