A COMMITTEE REPORT ON BLUE PRINT FOR COMMERCIALIZATION OF RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT RESUILTS IN NIGERIA
The Federal Ministry of Science and Technology have come out with a report of the Committee on Blue Print for Commercialization of Research and Development results in Nigeria.
The report was presented to the Honourable Minister Science and Technology, Dr Ogbonnaya Onu in his office today in Abuja, by the Director General/ Chief Executive Officer National Office for Technology Acquisition and Promotion (NOTAP) Dr Dan – Azummi Ibrahim.
In his opening remarks, the Honourable Minister said that he constituted the Committee on Blue print for Commercialization of Research and Developments in Nigeria in January 27th 2017 with the view of ensuring that our research findings remains important and relevant to the needs of Nigerians and should be market driven for national development
Dr Onu called on all researchers in the country to protect their intellectual properties by securing their products through patency. He urged them to aim higher and put in more efforts in their research findings, and ensure that any research findings that deserve commercialization must receive adequate protection.
The Minister also said that once the research findings are secured, investors would be confident in investing in our products and services in Nigeria.
He assured Nigerians that one of the agencies of the ministry, NOTAP has the capacity to register research findings for researchers who are willing to apply for patency at no cost to them.
Dr Onu, further stated that the commercialization of products is not only limited to the Ministry’s research findings but also will be extended to all research institutions, universities, polytechnics, private and industrial research institutes in Nigeria.
He emphasised that Nigeria cannot continue importing goods into the country but rather should embark on local production in order to provide jobs, create wealth and fight poverty to the barest minimum.
He stated that the time for the challenge has come for investors to come in and commercialize research findings after which they will benefit from proceeds from the products by producing these goods in Nigeria using our own technology.
He added that if commercialization of our local products is achieved, Nigeria would be able to use her intellect and resources to solve our national problems.
In his opening address , Dr Dan Azummi Ibrahim informed the Minister that the Blue Print on Commercialization of Research and Development (R&D) Results in Nigeria was produced to serve as a guide and reference material for researchers and research institutions in the country and to facilitate the commercialization of their R&D results and innovative efforts.
In a related development, the Computer Registration Council of Nigeria also paid a courtesy visit to the Minister in his office today.
While on the visit the Council’s Chairman Mr Vincent Asu briefed the Minister that the Council was seeking for collaboration with the Federal Ministry of Science and Technology to protect Nigerians from cyber threats and attack by ensuring that all cyber cafes in Nigeria register with CPN as specified in the cyber crime 2015 Act.
In his response, Dr Onu assured the Council of the ministry’s support and willingness to collaborate with them because the ministry needs CPN to realize her goal of ensuring that our country efficiently and effectively utilizes the abundant human and natural resources and to ensure that the cyber crime Act 2015 is fully implemented for nation building.
