NBBRI TO HOST RIGAN 2019 IN LAGOS

Onu Challenges Agencies on Sports kits

 Research Institutes in the Ministry of Science and Technology have been mandated to produce affordable sporting equipment that would enable Nigeria excel in international competitions.

The Minister of Science and Technology Dr. Ogbonnaya Onu, gave the charge at the presentation of hosting rights for 2019 by the Research Institute Games Association of Nigeria (RIGAN) to Nigerian Building and Road Research Development Institute, (NBBRI) on Thursday 19th April, 2018, in Abuja.

He disclosed that two agencies in the Ministry- National Institute of Leather Science and Technology (NILST) and the National Research for Chemical Technology (NARICT) had produced high quality football of international standard to promote sporting activities as well as create jobs and reduce poverty.

According to Dr. Onu, “We have encouraged that because we want sport not just for entertainment but also as an industry: one that is capable of offering employment to our people and also capable of helping us to create wealth and defeat extreme poverty”.

“It will also help Nigerians to employ many of our young people, not just those who are directly involved in sporting activities. It will also play a major role in the production and marketing of sporting equipment as a way of growing our economy” He added

The Minister commended the Research Institute Games Association of Nigeria,   (RIGAN) for its contributions to sports development in the country.  He noted that sport is very important in nation building and remained a major instrument for national integration.

Sports, Dr. Onu added, encourages  great sense of oneness, bringing our country, our people together,  adding that anything that can make Nigerians proud of their country, feel like one people, have commitment to one nation,  beyond  ethnicity should be promoted.

Earlier, the president of RIGAN Prof Rabiu Adamu said that the competition which is for staff of research and development institutes of Nigeria is held  every two years and would enable staff to interact, exchange ideas and promote friendly rivalry among the institutes.

It is also intended to promote research institutes   and give them the platform to exhibit their products and showcase their activities
