The Federal Government is set to boost girl- child education in the rural areas in the current economic development process of Nigeria.

 The Minister of Science and Technology, Dr Ogbonnaya Onu, disclosed this when the Organization for Women in Science for the Developing World ( OWSD)   visited him in his Office at the weekend.

Dr Onu said that girl – child education is crucial in human capital development of our great nation.

 According to the Minister, for Nigeria to realise its greatness globally, she must make strong impact through the deployment of science, technology and innovation by boosting girl- child education in our rural areas.

‘’ we are not leaving any single citizen out especially the girl- child in our human, economic and political development plan in Nigeria’’ he added.

Dr Onu called on the Organization to harness and mentor the potentials of the girl- child in schools through her chapters at the rural areas across the nation.

He called on the body to take the lead through significant contributions in all sectors of the economy for national development.

He further said when we harness the potentials of our girl – child education in Nigeria; we will reduce poverty, provide jobs and create wealth as well as create opportunities for future entrepreneurs.

 Dr Onu said ‘’ this is a national effort where every Nigerian should play a major role.’’

In her welcome address, the National President of Organization for Women in Science for Developing World, Professor Ibiyinka Fuwape said that the Organization is poised in assisting the Ministry in achieving this mandate.

 In addition, she suggested that the sensitization project on Science Technology Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) should include the retraining of science teachers, especially in creating innovative ways of teaching science subjects in schools across the nation.
