The Federal Ministry of Science and Technology has pledged to work with women scientists to help popularize the importance of science and technology in nation building particularly among the Girl-Child.
The Minister of Science and Technology, Dr. Ogbonnya Onyu made the pledge recently in Abuja at the 25th Anniversary celebration and 4th International Conference of the Organization for Women in Science for the Developing World (OWSD) held on Tuesday 17th July 2018 in Abuja.
According to Dr. Onu, “Mentoring will help excite the interest of girl-child in the study of science and mathematics at the primary and secondary school’s levels”.
He added that “The skills developed will be very useful in teaching the young ones to become problem solvers. This will help the girl become critical thinkers and hence better understand that many of the problems we face daily, can be solved by ourselves”.
According to Dr. Onu, Nigeria has to mobilize and utilize all available human resources in country in order to prepare for a future that will be bright, a nation that is peaceful and prosperous as well as people that are happy and contented.
The conference, with the theme “Role of Women Scientists in crises Management and Sustenance of Violent free Society” brought together eminent women scientists who have offered leadership in the areas of Education, health, agriculture, manufacturing, infrastructural development research and innovation.
Dr. Onu commended the outstanding contribution of women scientists in the important task of nation building, adding that the theme of the conference is most appropriate considering the urgent need to develop appropriate crises management strategies for effective conflict resolutions.
He said that his ministry will be working closely with the OWSD to ensure that empowerment of women in science, technology and innovation for common good
He said that the Buhari’s administration is determined to ensure that no one is left behind in the task of nation-building. Every Nigerian, male or female, young or old Should be given the necessary skills to give or her best for the development our nation
In her good message the first lady, Hajia Aisha Buhari who was represent by Hajia Binta Muazu said that the outcome of the conference will assist the government in formulating policies that will stem the cause of crises in the country.
The National President of the Organization, Prof. Ibiyinka Fuwape noted that the event was, put together to encourage rural girls in science.
