The regulation and monitoring of quality of drugs by regulatory agencies in the country can only be effective when Nigeria starts largescale production of drugs locally in the country.

The Minister of Science and Technology, Dr. Ogbonnaya Onu stated   this when the executive of the Nigeria Association of Pharmacists in           Academia paid him a courtesy visit on Tuesday, 6thJuly, 2018 in Abuja.

Dr. Onu added that Idea of local production is critical to the fight against poverty, job and wealth creation and charged them to venture into entrepreneurship in addition to their teaching vocation, adding that this will give them the leverage to convert their research findings into products.

Dr. frowned at the rate at which Nigerians travel outside the country for medical treatment and urged them to take advantage of the large market in Nigeria to produce what we use locally.

He commended the body for its contribution to national development, adding that the Ministry is committed to support any organization that supports the drive towards a knowledge based and innovation–driven economy.

Earlier, the National Chairman of the Association, Prof. Matins Emeje said they are seeking Minister’s support for their forth-coming conference scheduled to between August 12-14, 2018.

Prof Emeje disclosed that the organization is the umbrella body of pharmacists who teach and also research into pharmacy.

He said the organization is determined to ensure Nigeria produces her own pharmaceutical products  for local consumption. Her added that the Conference will brainstorm on the various modalities for indigenous production in the country.
