Nigeria is working assiduously to ensure energy efficiency so as to achieve genuine economic diversification.

The Minister of Science and Technology, Dr. Ogbonnaya  Onu disclosed this when he received the Secretary-General  of the International Energy Charter , Dr. Urban Rusnak  during the week in his office in Abuja.

Dr. Onu said energy efficiency and sufficiency is essential to achieving a knowledge and innovation-driven economy, adding that sustainable environment must also be factored in the energy mix.

The Ministry, through its parastatals, like Energy Commission of Nigeria (ECN), NASENI, etc is also working to promote renewable energy in the rural areas, he added.

Dr. Onu noted that Nigeria, given its geographical location is well- placed  to  exploit solar energy to develop rural areas and provide  value to the products in the country.

He promised that Nigeria will continue to work with the International Energy Charter now that the Energy Investment Risks for the country have been concluded.

Earlier, The Secretary-General of the International Energy Charter Dr. Urban Rusnak said that the International Energy Charter is committed to providing energy support for development in Nigeria.

He added that the Charter has also provided the energy Risk Assessment report based on recommended benchmark.
