The Minister of Science and Technology, Dr. Ogbonnaya Onu has stressed the need for Japan and Nigeria to boost their diplomatic relations, especially in Science and Technology.
Dr. Onu made the call when he received the Japanese Ambassador, Mr. Yukata Kikuta in his office on Thursday, 11th April in Abuja.
While commending Japan for its numerous assistance to Nigeria, Dr. Onu said Japan could be of great help to Nigeria in her quest to be a developed nation.
“Nigeria needs to pay a lot of attention to the key role Science, Technology and Innovation plays in national development, since our population is growing at a rate of 3.2%, by the turn of the century our population will be reaching almost a billion people”, he added.
Dr. Onu said, Science, Technology and Innovation is vital for the survival of any nation, adding that “Nigeria has decided to re-focus of her economy from commodities to a knowledge-based and Innovation driven economy”.
The minister, commended the Ambassador for his dynamic strides and insightful leadership in strengthening the relationship between the two countries.
Earlier, The Japanese Ambassador His Excellency Amb. Yutaka Kikuta, said both nations could explore more ways on collaboration especially in Science and Technology. “Japan wishes to contribute to the development of Nigeria in various sectors”, he added.
He further congratulated the current administration for its victory at the recent elections and expressed his nations determination to work closely with Nigeria.
