The Minister of Science and Technology, Dr. Ogbonnaya Onu, said Old Students’ Association could provide mentoring and guidance to the young students of their former schools and also improve the quality of teaching and infrastructure of the school through direct involvement with the school’s activities.
Dr. Onu said this at the convention of The Old Boys Students Association of Izzi High School Abakaliki, Ebonyi state on Thursday 16th of January.
According to Dr. Onu, “help in volunteer service, whereby professionals of all types can volunteer their time to prepare students for their examinations. The medical doctors, among us, can help offer free medical services to improve on the health of the students”, he added.
He also advocated for scholarships to students from disadvantaged backgrounds, in order to help cover necessary academic cost.
Dr. Onu stressed the need for quality education, in his words, “Education, particularly when it encourages innovation and creativity, remains the key for unlocking the tremendous potential of any nation. Nigeria is on her way to greatness. We are in a transition. Great things are happening”.
Dr. Onu encouraged the old student’s association of the school, not to be discouraged in their efforts to improve the fortunes of their Alma Mater, rather they should keep up their efforts as success will surely be achieved.
Dr. Onu also went down history lane on the events of the Nigerian Civil war, adding that the school was able to surmount the challenges of that period, with evidence in people of high standing and caliber being alumnus of the school.
