The Minister of Science and Technology, Dr. Ogbonnaya Onu has promised to avail the expertise and available Innovation and research outputs of the Ministry to enable Nigeria curb the spread of Covid-19.
Dr. Onu gave the pledge during the joint meeting of the Federal Ministry of Science and Technology and The Federal Ministry of Health on Covid-19 pandemic on Thursday in the Science Ministry’s headquarters in Abuja.
In the bid to find solutions to the challenges posed by the Covid-19 pandemic, Dr. Onu said the Ministry has developed a strategy of prevention, Tracking, Testing and Treatment (PT3) in short, medium and long term basis.
While saying that the pandemic was an opportunity for Nigeria to look inwards and produce home-grown solutions, Dr. Onu said agencies of the Ministry like National Agency for Science and Engineering Infrastructure (NASENI), National Board for Technological Incubation (NBTI), National Biotechnology Development Agency (NABDA) have been mobilized to start producing sanitizers, disinfectants, quality face-masks, medical hand-gloves, body immune boosters and vaccines.
On the tracking mode of the Ministry’s strategy, Dr.Onu said the Ministry was into production of tracking devices to track infected persons and persuade them to undergo testing. This, he added is being done through the National Space Research and Development Agency (NARSDA).
On testing mode of the Ministry’s strategy, the Minister said the Ministry has proposed the upgrading of National Biotechnology Development Agency (NABDA’s) molecular biology laboratories in Abuja and Odi in Bayelsa state, and NISLT multipurpose laboratory in Ibadan after thorough investigation by the Nigerian Academy of Science.
