The Minister of Science and Technology, Dr. Ogbonnaya Onu received the 2019 Sun Newspaper award for Outstanding Service in Governance on Friday in Abuja.
Dr. Onu, while accepting the award said that he will continue to strive hard to ensure that the mandate of the Ministry to drive the Science and Technological development of Nigeria is achieved.
He emphasised that only through Science and Technology, can the economic diversification of the country be realised in a sustainable and inclusive manner.
“Nigeria has some of the most intelligent people in the world, who have proved themselves in various fields and endeavours” he added.
However the key to unlock the tremendous energy of Nigerians is to deploy Science, Technology and Innovation in the developmental mix.
He said that Science, Technology and Innovation, will unlock the enormous potentials that would propel Nigeria to greatness and make her a pride of place in the comity of nations.
In his words, “The missing link to Nigeria’s attainment of greatness is insufficient attention to Science, Technology and Innovation”.
Science, Technology and Innovation, he added, is key to sustainable economic development and will also increase revenue and improve the value of the Naira in the international currency market.
Dr. Onu dedicated the award to the Ministry and appreciated the management of the Sun newspaper for the award.
He further described the SUN Newspapers as a media outfit that has contributed positively to the development of the country.
Earlier, the Managing Director and Editor-in-Chief of The Sun newspaper, Mr. Onuoha Ukeh said that Dr. Onu won the award on merit for delivering the core mandate of developing Science, Technology and Innovation in Nigeria.
Mr. Onuoha described the Minister as a visionary leader and an advocate of the development of technological incubation centres, indigenous technology development and others.
He added that the integrity he brought to public service and his distinguished personality made him worthy of the award.
