RENEWABLE AND CONVENTIONAL ENERGY TECHNOLOGY DEPARTMENT

• The Renewable and Conventional Energy Technology Department promotes and coordinates Research and Development (R&D) support for improved renewable energy generation, transmission, distribution, and utilization in an environment friendly manner.
• The Department is also saddled with the responsibility to collaborates with other Ministries, Departments, Agencies, Organized Private Sector and International Organizations on matters affecting energy development in the following key areas:
• Nuclear Energy;
• Renewable Energy;
• Conventional Energy

The Department is headed by a Direction with the following Divisions Headed by Deputy Directors

1.1 DEPARTMENTAL ACTIVITES

1. Energy Policy Initiation and Development;
2. Technology Promotion, Facilitation and Coordination on Energy Matters;

8. Energy Technology Acquisition and Diffusion.

1.2 FUNCTIONS AND MANDATES

1. Initiate, develop and review policies in collaboration with appropriate             MDAs, Stakeholders in the Organized Private Sector on Conventional        and Renewable Energies and ensure that sectorial energy policies are consistent with the National Energy Policy.
2. Develop priorities in energy research and development in Conventional and Renewable Energy including Nuclear Energy, Oil and Gas, Tar sand, etc and determination of programmers and projects for their implementation in the country.
3. Promote Research and Development for providing solutions to energy related problems associated with environmental degradation, pollution and climatic changes.
4. Supervise relevant Energy Research Institutions of the Federal Ministry of Science and Technology.
5. Develop Roadmap in collaboration with appropriate MDAs and Stakeholders in the Organized Private Sector for the integration of Renewable Energy into the existing energy mix.
6. Develop strategies for deployment and utilization of Renewable Energy for the transformation of rural communities.
7. Continually organize sensitization activities and programmes on availability and utilization of renewable and Conventional energy sources.
8. Promote in collaboration with appropriate MDAs and Stakeholders in the Organized Private Sector the development and deployment of locally produced renewable power equipment for sustainable power industry.
9. Liaise and partner with National, Regional and International Groups/Bodies on capacity building and strengthening in Conventional and Renewable Energy Technology.
10. Develop and manage repository on energy statistics and economics.
11. Initiate and develop activities and programmes in collaboration with appropriate MDAs and Stakeholders in the Organized Private Sector for the implementation of Clean Coal Technology.
12. Partner with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) on the development of Nuclear power.
13. Partner with appropriate International, Regional and National Bodies on the use of radioactive agents.
14. Develop R&D, demonstrate and develop capabilities in solar, wind, biofuel, hydro and other renewable energies.
15. Promote the use of safe, clean, efficient and sustainable energy technologies for national development.
16. Encourage the development of energy conversion technologies for sustainable power generation.
17. Facilitate the adaptation of appropriate energy technologies for rural development.
18. Encourage the development and deployment of locally produced power equipment for sustainable power industry.
19. Support national vision to acquire technologies for sustainable power industry.
20. Initiate, develop and review policies in collaboration with appropriate MDAs, Stakeholders in the organized Private Sector on Renewable and Renewable Energies and ensure that sectorial energy policies are consistent with the National Energy Policy.
