FMIST Accelerates Nigeria’s CleanTech Industrial Takeoff with GCIP Phase II

The Federal Ministry of Innovation, Science and Technology (FMIST) has reaffirmed Nigeria’s bold commitment to clean technology industrialisation as it deepens collaboration with the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) under the Global Cleantech Innovation Programme (GCIP).

Speaking at a high-level bilateral meeting today in Abuja, the Honourable Minister of Innovation, Science and Technology, Dr. Kingsley Tochukwu Udeh, SAN, who was represented by the Permanent Secretary, Mr. Philip Ndiomu Ebiogeh described the engagement as a strategic inflection point in Nigeria’s drive toward scalable, impact-driven clean technology development.

Aligned with the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the Minister highlighted ongoing national efforts—including energy transition initiatives, clean cooking programmes, and sustainable mobility pilots—aimed at accelerating decarbonisation, strengthening energy security, and generating innovation-led employment.

Dr. Udeh announced Nigeria’s co-financing commitment to GCIP Phase II, stressing that the programme will serve as a national platform to move clean technology solutions from research to market, from prototypes to production, and from start-ups to globally competitive enterprises.

“GCIP Phase II is not just an innovation programme; it is a strategic vehicle to unlock investment, industrialise clean technologies, and position Nigeria as a regional leader in sustainable industrial development,” the Minister stated.

Earlier, UNIDO’s Associate Technical Officer, Mr. Luca Longo, expressed appreciation to the Ministry for its diligent collaboration in ensuring the successful implementation of GCIP Phase I, which is now nearing completion. He reaffirmed the Organization’s commitment to strengthening its partnership with the Government of Nigeria and the private sector to unlock the country’s vast industrial potential and promote sustainable development that drives inclusive economic growth.

In her welcome address, the Director of Environmental Science and Technology (EST), Mrs. Bernadette Ogwuche, described the GCIP as a strategic platform that bridges research to market, ideas to industry, and innovation to inclusive economic growth.

Mrs. Ogwuche stated that the programme’s objective is to support the deployment of prototypes through production and full commercialisation, thereby accelerating Nigeria’s clean technology ecosystem.

FMIST reiterated its commitment to delivering measurable socio-economic impact through strong institutions, robust private sector participation, and effective global partnerships as implementation of GCIP Phase II commences.
