OUR STRUCTURE:

The Department of Bioresources Technology is a technical department within the Ministry, responsible for the development and sustainable management of Nigeria’s biological resources.

To ensure effective implementation of its functions, the Department is structured into two divisions:

  1. Biotechnology Research and Development (R&D)
    • Focused on innovation, application, and advancement of biotechnology for national development.
  2. Biodiversity Conservation and Utilization Research and Development (R&D)
    • Dedicated to preserving biodiversity and promoting sustainable utilization of biological resources.

OUR MANDATES:

  • Formulation, monitoring and review of the National Policy on Science, Technology and Innovation to attain the macro-economic and social objectives of vision 20:2020 as it relates to the Bioresources Technology subsector of Science and Technology;
  • Acquisition and Application of Science, Technology and Innovation apparatus to conserve and exploit, map, bio-prospect, commercialize and sustainably manage the biodiversity and bioresources endowment of Nigeria;
  • Promotion of wealth and job creation through technical support Entrepreneurs and the Private sector in the area of Bioresource conversation, bioprospection and commercialization;
  • Monitoring and coordination of Research and Development (R & D) in bioresources;
  • Formulation and promotion of appropriate:
  • guidelines on conversation and utilization of Bioresources;
  • Guidelines on development and commercialization of Bioresources;
  • Guidelineson utilizationand agricultural varietal release;
  • R & D findings for value addition of agricultural produce;
  • Collaboration with local and International Agencies/Bodies on Biodiversity management;

            AGENCY/PARASTATAL UNDER THE PURVIEW OF THE DEPARTMENT:

  1. National Biotechnology Research and Development Agency (NBRDA) with 24 BioresourceCentres scattered across the 6 geo-political zones.
