FMIST, SWAP, UNITAID Forge Alliance on Climate-Smart Healthcare in Nigeria

The Federal Ministry of Innovation, Science and Technology (FMIST) has strengthened Nigeria’s drive toward climate-smart healthcare through a high-level engagement with the Nigeria Healthcare Sector-Wide Approach (SWAP) Coordination Office and UNITAID in Abuja, aimed at deepening collaboration and aligning national priorities. The Honourable Minister, Dr. Kingsley Tochukwu Udeh, SAN, represented by the Permanent Secretary, Dr. Mukhtar Yawale Muhammad, reaffirmed the Ministry’s commitment to deploying science, technology, and innovation to address climate-related health challenges, particularly in primary healthcare systems across rural communities. He emphasized the Ministry’s strategic focus on leveraging innovation to enhance research capacity, empower local innovators, support economic diversification, and improve sustainable energy supply in healthcare facilities nationwide. Discussions centered on key areas of partnership, including digital transformation, research and development, capacity building, and commercialization of innovation, alongside strengthening inter-agency collaboration for effective delivery of impactful health and climate initiatives. Speaking on behalf of SWAP Coordination Office, the Climate Health Lead, Baraka Muazu highlighted its role in coordinating health sector activities under a unified national framework to ensure efficient resource alignment, reduce duplication, and promote results-driven healthcare delivery, while UNITAID’s Director of Results and Climate, Vincent Bretin, explained that the organization’s focus is to advance innovations to combat diseases such as tuberculosis, malaria, and HIV/AIDS in developing countries. The Honourable Minister of Innovation, Science and Technology, Dr. Kingsley Tochukwu Udeh, SAN has reaffirmed the Federal Government’s commitment to expanding technological development and research commercialisation across the States during a courtesy visit by the Asagba of Asaba, His Royal Majesty, Professor Epiphany Azinge, SAN,to the Ministry today in Abuja. The Minister stated that the visit opened discussions on strategic collaboration between the Federal Ministry of Innovation, Science and Technology ( FMIST) and Delta State to drive technological advancement, innovation, and economic growth. Dr. Udeh disclosed that the Ministry, through the Energy Commission of Nigeria (ECN), will support sustainable power supply in the state by installing solar mini-grids in their academic and health institutions to stimulate and strengthen activities of such critical sectors of the economy. He also highlighted the Ministry’s Energise Commercialisation Programme, designed to bridge the gap between scientific research outcomes and the marketplace, ensuring that research findings translate into tangible economic benefits for Nigerians. He noted that government is working closely with private sector investors to commercialise research innovations in line with global best practices. The Minister commended the Asagba for his commitment to the unity, development, and cultural heritage of the Asaba people, stressing the importance of collaboration with traditional institutions to deepen grassroots participation in innovation initiatives across the country.
