FG SET TO HARNESS FULL POTENTIAL OF STI ECOSYSTEM

The Federal Government through the Federal Ministry of Innovation Science and Technology (FMIST) is set to harness the full potentials of Science, Technology and Innovation (STI) ecosystem through collaboration with relevant stakeholders in order to ensure that research results are market driven for economic diversitifaction and betterment of the citizens. Speaking at a fireside chat with the title “Reshaping Nigeria’s Potential in Science, Technology and Innovation” , at the Center for the Study of Economies of Africa arena in Abuja. The Honorable Minister of Innovation Science and Technology Dr. Kingsley Tochukwu Udeh SAN said that the Ministry will identify national priority areas and deploy home grown technologies in solving them in order to encourage local industries and create jobs for our teeming youth. He pointed out that the Ministry under his leadership will work assiduously with relevant stakeholders to transform the country’s economy from material to knowledge-based economy, adding that no country has ever developed without the full deployment of technological apparatus to all sectors of the economy for the advancement of the Country. Udeh disclosed that the Ministry through its Agency Energy Commission of Nigeria(ECN) has concluded plans to solarize some tertiary institutions and hospitals across the six geopolitical zones including FCT with solar minigrid as part of its efforts to solve power shortage among others. The Minister reiterated the Ministry’s commitment towards resuscitating the Innovation Hubs and Incubation Centers across the 36 states to enable them meet up with international standard and also harness the potentials of Nigerian teaming youths into innovative and research products for commercialization which will contribute to the growth of the economy. He commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Administration under the Renewed Hope Agenda for its commitment towards the advancement of STI ecosystem, ensuring that all hands are on desk to ensure 30% value addition to raw materials and transform them into products before exportation so as to grow our foreign reserve, redeem the value of naira and reduce poverty to the barest minimum. In his key note address, the President African University of Science and Technology Abuja, Prof. Azikiwe Peter Onwualu said that reshaping Nigerian’s STI potentials means creating physical infrastructure, provision of financial structure and robust policies to retain the best talent that would solve the country’s toughest challenges thereby creating wealth and transforming the economy from import oriented to production economy. He further stated that, Science, Technology and Innovation are the engines that drives economic growth, social wellbeing and national competiveness in the world economy. Earlier, the Executive Director, Centre for the Study of the Economies of Africa (CSEA), Dr. Chukwuka Onyekwena said that the event provides a unique opportunity to reflect on the role the Ministry plays in shaping Nigeria’s technological future from artificial intelligence to biotechnology, renewable energy, digital finance and agriculture. FMIST TO COLLABORATE WITH ATLAS ORANTO PETROLEUM ON STI

The Honorable Minister, Federal Ministry of Innovation, Science and Technology, Dr Kingsley Tochukwu Udeh, SAN played a host to the founder and CEO of Atlas Oranto Petroleum Prince Arthur Eze in his office today in Abuja. They held a strategic meeting on promoting and advancing Science, Technology and Innovation (STI) to a greater height. NITR AND NNMDA SIGNS MoU TO TACKLE RIVER BLINDNESS AND SLEEPING SICKNESS

The Nigerian Institute for Trypanosomiasis Research (NITR) and the Nigerian Natural Medicine Development Agency (NNMDA) signed Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) today in Abuja to establish a collaborative frame work for research, development, validation and commercialization of non-repellant products aimed at protecting the citizens against River Blindness and Sleeping Sickness using indigenous technology. Speaking at the event the Permanent Secretary of Innovation, Science and Technology, Mr. Phillip Ndiomu said that the collaboration reflects the Ministry’s commitment towards innovation-driven solutions that translate research into practical home grown technologies for public health protection, disease control and economic value creation. Phillip further said that the event marks a significant step towards advancing science, natural resources and innovation for national development. He added that the collaboration is also a step towards total transformation of science and technology eco-system for the betterment of the citizens. The Permanent Secretary commended the Director-Generals for working assiduously using indigenous technology to treat the menace that is affecting the nation. DEEPENING BILATERAL COOPERATION IN INNOVATION AND TECHNOLOGY : Austrian Ambassador Visits FMIST Minister

In furtherance of strengthening bilateral relations and advancing global collaboration in Science, Technology, and Innovation (STI), the Honourable Minister of Innovation, Science and Technology, Dr Kingsley Tochukwu Udeh, SAN received the Austrian Ambassador to Nigeria His Excellency Peter Guschelbauer who paid him a courtesy visit recently at the Ministry’s headquarters in Abuja. The visit underscored the growing partnership between Nigeria and Austria, particularly in the areas of innovation-driven development, scientific research, technology transfer, and capacity building. Dr Udeh reaffirmed Nigeria’s commitment to fostering mutually beneficial international partnerships that support sustainable development and economic diversification. Discussions during the meeting focused on exploring areas of collaboration in innovation ecosystems, research and development, digital transformation, renewable energy, skills development, and industrial technology. The Honourable Minister emphasized the Ministry’s mandate to leverage global best practices and international cooperation to enhance Nigeria’s technological capacity and competitiveness. Following the recent redeployment of the Permanent Secretaries by the Office of the Head of Civil Service of the Federation (OHCSC), Mrs. Esuabana Nko Asanye handed over to Mr. Philip Ndiomu Ebiogeh as the newly posted Permanent Secretary to the Federal Ministry of Innovation, Science, and Technology.In her outgoing remarks, Mrs. Esuabana charged the management to continue to build on the landmark achievements and breakthroughs made so far in order to lead the Science Technology and Innovation (STI) ecosystem to a greater height. She added that STI, being the bedrock of development of any nation, if properly harnessed, will tackle the challenges faced in the country. Also, she assured the in-coming Permanent Secretary of the management\’s unwavering support she enjoyed during the period of her posting in the Ministry. FG TO PROVIDE POLICY SUPPORT AND INCENTIVE FOR AUTOMOTIVE SECTOR

PRESS RELEASE 18th November,2025 The Federal Government said it will provide policy support and incentives to the Automotive Sector and make Nigeria the undisputable hub for both Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) and Electric Vehicles (EVs) in West Africa. FMIST SENSITIZES STAFF AND STAKEHOLDERS ON GMOs

PRESS RELEASE 10th October, 2025 The Permanent Secretary, Federal Ministry of Innovation, Science and Technology, Mrs. Esuabana Nko Asanye has charged staff of the Ministry, it’s Agencies and all stakeholders in innovation, science and technology to equip themselves with knowledge and be well informed as custodians of knowledge and channels of accurate information to the wider society. Mrs. Esubana made this statement at the 2-day sensitization workshop on Genetically Modified Organisms (GMOs) organized by the Ministry in collaboration with it’s Agency- the National Biotechnology Research Development Agency ( NABRDA) today, in Abuja. According to the Permanent Secretary, the sensitization workshop is aimed at equipping the staff with accurate knowledge, correct misconceptions that have arisen from misinformation, provide clarity on what GMOs are and what they are not and also highlight the benefits and risks associated with GMOs so as to make informed contributions to national discourse. She pointed out that for a developing country like Nigeria, grappling with the challenges of food insecurity, climate change, population growth it is crucial for the nation to embrace innovation that can help guarantee sustainable food production and reduction in cost of food items to the barest minimum. Esuabana urged the participants to be open minded, engage actively, ask questions and seek clarification so that at the end we will all have a deeper appreciation of GMOs as well as become ambassadors of accurate knowledge within and outside the service. In a goodwill message, the Director-General National Biosafety Management Agency (NBMA) Barrister Bello Bwari said that for scientific discoveries to become authentic, it goes through processes of validation and revalidation to ensure that it is safe for human consumption and the environment. He further said that because of the importance of GMOs around the world, the federal government in its wisdom established agencies like NBMA to verify the products if it’s safe for human consumption and the environment. Earlier the Director-General National Biotechnology Research Development Agency (NBRDA) Prof. Abdullahi Mustapha, said that the Agency is committed to advancing biotechnology in ways that are save, transparent, and socially beneficial by harnessing sound science so that innovation can serve the people, sustain the environment, and accelerate national development goals. He added that the workshop presents a timely platform to explore the science, regulatory frame work, scientific innovation in agricultural biotechnology, the measurable benefits of greater resilience to pests and drought, reduce reliance on chemicals, pesticide, improve nutrition quality, higher yields as well as real-world experiences of farmers and communities in Nigeria who are pioneering the cultivation of genetically modify crops.
