FMIST, EU Strengthen Strategic Partnership to Advance Science, Innovation and Inclusive Growth

Press Release9th, February, 2026 The Honourable Minister of Innovation, Science and Technology, Dr. Kingsley Tochukwu Udeh, SAN, has reiterated the Federal Government’s resolve to leverage strategic international partnerships to accelerate innovation, deepen research outcomes, and drive sustainable national development, as he received the Ambassador of the European Union to Nigeria, His Excellency Gautier Mignot, on a courtesy visit today at the Ministry’s headquarters in Abuja. The visit provided an opportunity to formally congratulate the Honourable Minister on his recent appointment and to reaffirm the long-standing, strategic partnership between the European Union and the Federal Ministry of Innovation, Science and Technology (FMIST), anchored on shared priorities in Innovation, Science, Technology (STI) development, and human capital advancement. Discussions during the meeting focused on strengthening collaboration in critical areas of research, innovation, and technology, with a shared commitment to harnessing science and innovation as key drivers of job creation, improved livelihoods, and sustainable economic growth in Nigeria. The EU delegation briefed the Honourable Minister on major forthcoming initiatives under the EU–Nigeria cooperation framework, including the first-ever Nigeria–EU Science and Innovation Day, scheduled for 24 February at the Wole Soyinka Centre for Creative Arts, Lagos; the commencement of negotiations for a Science, Technology, and Innovation (STI) Agreement between the European Union and Nigeria; and the next phase of cooperation under Horizon Europe – Phase IV, which will support Africa Initiative IV with approximately €600 million. The programme is expected to significantly expand opportunities for Nigerian researchers, innovators, institutions and startups to access global research funding, grants, and collaborative networks. The European Union emphasized its strong interest in deepening collaboration with FMIST to deliver practical, people-centred outcomes, noting that enhanced partnerships in research, digital innovation, capacity building and technology transfer would strengthen institutions and promote inclusive national development. Dr. Udeh reaffirmed FMIST’s readiness to work closely with the European Union to accelerate and energise the commercialization of Nigeria’s innovation ecosystem, promote knowledge exchange, and position Nigeria as a leading hub for science, technology and innovation in Africa. FG Moves to Commercialise Research Outputs, Adopts Market-Driven Innovation Strategy

The Federal Government has reaffirmed its commitment to commercialising research outputs and adopting a market-driven research approach as a strategic response to Nigeria’s economic challenges. The Honourable Minister of Innovation, Science and Technology, Dr. Kingsley Udeh, SAN made this known while receiving a delegation from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT)–Kuo Sharper Centre for Prosperity and Entrepreneurship( MIT KSC) on a courtesy visit to his office in Abuja. According to the Minister, the focus of the Federal Government is no longer limited to the production of academic research or patents, but on ensuring that scientific knowledge is translated into tangible economic value and improved wellbeing for Nigerians. “Our mission goes beyond producing research papers or patents; it is about translating knowledge into tangible wealth and wellbeing for every Nigerian,” Dr. Udeh stated. He explained that the present administration is prioritising industry-focused research, aimed at converting the needs of the productive sectors into viable products and services for commercialisation. This approach, he noted, will drive wealth creation, job opportunities for the nation’s teeming youth, and significantly reduce poverty. Dr. Udeh reiterated that Nigeria’s Science, Technology and Innovation (STI) vision is bold and clearly defined to position the country as a global scientific and innovation powerhouse. This ambition, he said, is firmly anchored in the National Science, Technology and Innovation Policy (NSTIP 2022), which provides the strategic framework for leveraging STI to build a strong, diversified, sustainable, and competitive economy. FG SET TO HARNESS FULL POTENTIAL OF STI ECOSYSTEM

The Federal Government through the Federal Ministry of Innovation Science and Technology (FMIST) is set to harness the full potentials of Science, Technology and Innovation (STI) ecosystem through collaboration with relevant stakeholders in order to ensure that research results are market driven for economic diversitifaction and betterment of the citizens. Speaking at a fireside chat with the title “Reshaping Nigeria’s Potential in Science, Technology and Innovation” , at the Center for the Study of Economies of Africa arena in Abuja. The Honorable Minister of Innovation Science and Technology Dr. Kingsley Tochukwu Udeh SAN said that the Ministry will identify national priority areas and deploy home grown technologies in solving them in order to encourage local industries and create jobs for our teeming youth. He pointed out that the Ministry under his leadership will work assiduously with relevant stakeholders to transform the country’s economy from material to knowledge-based economy, adding that no country has ever developed without the full deployment of technological apparatus to all sectors of the economy for the advancement of the Country. In his key note address, the President African University of Science and Technology Abuja, Prof. Azikiwe Peter Onwualu said that reshaping Nigerian’s STI potentials means creating physical infrastructure, provision of financial structure and robust policies to retain the best talent that would solve the country’s toughest challenges thereby creating wealth and transforming the economy from import oriented to production economy. NITR AND NNMDA SIGNS MoU TO TACKLE RIVER BLINDNESS AND SLEEPING SICKNESS

The Nigerian Institute for Trypanosomiasis Research (NITR) and the Nigerian Natural Medicine Development Agency (NNMDA) signed Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) today in Abuja to establish a collaborative frame work for research, development, validation and commercialization of non-repellant products aimed at protecting the citizens against River Blindness and Sleeping Sickness using indigenous technology. Speaking at the event the Permanent Secretary of Innovation, Science and Technology, Mr. Phillip Ndiomu said that the collaboration reflects the Ministry’s commitment towards innovation-driven solutions that translate research into practical home grown technologies for public health protection, disease control and economic value creation. Phillip further said that the event marks a significant step towards advancing science, natural resources and innovation for national development. He added that the collaboration is also a step towards total transformation of science and technology eco-system for the betterment of the citizens.
